WTB: 300 RUM Rifle around 6lbs.

Looking for this to carrry on side hills for bear. I would like a 300 RUM or 338 RUM that weighs around 6lbs and is short.

I've looked all over the web and the closest thing I can find is a Tikka 300 WSM... Would prefer to stay w/ the RUM since I have one setup for long range shooting right now... It's just TOO HEAVY to carry around

Thanks!

Melvin Forbes at New Ultralight arms is your choice to go to. Cost will be around $2800. He makes the lightest guns on the market and I do not know of anyone else who could make a 6 lb RUM

I would think that the 325 WSM in Tikka would be a much better and more cost effective choice though for your stated purpose.

6lb RUM... Wow! I wonder, if you put the muzzle against one elk, and the buttstock against another, which one would drop first?

haha! yes, obviously recoil isn't a concern. I've looked at the 325 WSM but it doesn't seem to have the energy of a RUM. Perhaps I'm looking for too much rifle for my needs?

I'll be taking black bear in 50-250 yards most of the time, BUT some of the side hills are open where you can see across the valley so I would like to be able to take on at 600-700 yards if need be... Do you think a 300 WSM or 325 WSM would handle that?

    Here is what i calculated:

    300 WSM, 180gr accubond
    - 200 yds - 2588 fps, 2677 ft lbs energy
    - 600 yds - 1935 fps, 1496 ft lbs energy

    325 WSM, 200gr accubond
    - 200 yds - 2544 fps, 2874 ft lbs energy
    - 600 yds - 1824 fps, 1477 ft lbs energy

    300 RUM, 180gr accubond
    - 200 yds - 2931 fps, 3434 ft lbs energy
    - 600 yds - 2227 fps, 1982 ft lbs energy

Please let me know your thoughts.

    thanks for the help!

    Just ran some numbers.

300 WSM with 200gr AB should just about match your 180 from a RUM at 600yards, due to better BC.

    200gr AccuBond (.588 G1), 2930fps (RL17) 29.00 Hg pressure 80degree F
    200yards- 3091 ft/lbs
    600yards- 1953 ft/lbs

300 WSM with the 200 AB and a good muzzle brake should make for an awesome rifle!

I'd go with a lightweight 300 wsm, it will more than do what you need. A short lightweight RUM really doesn't make any sense to me. 300 saum is a awesome round too. I went and shot mine yesterday and chronographed 165 accubonds at 3155 with RL17.Thats in a 22 inch barrel !
