Just bear in mind with larger bullets you lose a lot of case capacity in the 300 wsm if you are using a short action. To use the cartridge to its fullest extent, you should use a long action.

completely false information on the WSM on several counts.

1. Barrel life- Danny Brooks won the IBS 1k Nationals and shooter of the year in 2009 with a 300 WSM with 4000 rounds down the tube.

That has never been done with a Win Mag, which was Danny's go to caliber before. Mine had 2300 rds down the tube before I rebarreled. The standard on a Win mag for 1k is 1000-1200 rds. WSM barrels are lasting 2-3x LONGER than Win Mags and that is the fact.

2. Ballistics- the WSM will run with and even faster in some cases than the Win Mag with up to 210 grain bullets. Winchester factory ammo lists the WSM as faster than the same bullet in the Win Mag. For all practical purposes, they are neck and neck ballistically.

However, with barrel life and short action vs long action, the WSM winds hands down every time, IF you know anything about the WSM.

Re: 300 WM vs 300 wsm

Ballistically the .300 WSM & Win Mag rounds are so close to each other there is no point arguing ballistic advantage.

The Win Mag has been around much longer and you will find shells in almost every little town you come across. When the WSM was first introduced many stores didn't stock ammunition to fit. The WSM is fast becoming as popular as the Win Mag so cartridge availability is no longer something to worry about.

The WSM cartridges fit in a short action, which can save you a few ounces of cary-weight. The WSM cartridges do not have a belt, which means one major stress point has been removed from the case AND the shell will orient based on the shoulder for the possibility of better accuracy & the likelihood of longer case life.

I believe the .300 WSM is a slightly better design based on the above, but the differences are small VERY SMALL. If I was designing a gun from scratch I would opt for the WSM. Otherwise my choice might be controlled by which cartridge I found available in a gun I liked.

Re: 300 WM vs 300 wsm

dont much care what others have wrote about it. Ive worked up loads for both and the win will outpace the short mag by a good 100fps if equal pressure loads are used at least it does over my chronograph. . Compare factor ammo and there a toss up but the wsm is loaded to higher pressures and in the same gun theres no reason why a win mag cant be loaded to those pressures. Argue to your blue in the face but case capasity favors the win mag and more powder means more speed. I know the argument that the shorter cases is more effecient but its about no differnt then claiming the 308 will outpace an o6. It just aint happening. Not at the same pressure levels with the same lenght barrels. Now again if you were comparing both in a 22 inch barrel the gap would close. In all reality an extra 100 or 150 fps doesnt buy you alot but its there. The short mag is a great round. Ive found every rifle ive ever shot in it to be exceptionaly accurate but comparison wize youd best stick to the 300 H&H and thats nothing to sneeze at.

Case capacity does not always mean more speed. Efficiancy will win too, and that is where the WSM is.

As for same pressures, DUH, the WSM is built for higher pressures while the Win Mag is not, so totally bogus arguement. The WSM can be taken to higher pressures yet over the Win Mag so Win Mag can never win equal speed arguement due to the pressure differences.

Not about reading it somewhere also. Been shooting the WSM since it came out and built probably the first comp gun with it, so 10 years of experience with it AND the Win Mag, 6 WSM guns and numerous barrels I have a real good handle on what is and isn't with both.
