Lapping Nightforce rings???
The Nightforce scope just came in and we also got the NF rings and bases. The Nightforce book says to lap the rings when you mount the scope. Just seems a little weird to have a spendy ring and base setup that needs to be lapped. Is their instruction for when someone uses rings of a lower quality, or are you really supposed to lap a $160 set of rings?

Lapping Night force rings???
I would check them first using lay-out dye or a sharpie marker. Color them then run a clean lapping bar through them and see if they really need lapped or not. If nothing else you'll know what you've got for contact on your tube. When I put mine on I used this procedure and found I had about 80-90% contact. I didn't lap mine and have had no trouble. Also have had scope off and no sign of ring marks. Hope this helps.

I'm NOT a gunsmith!
Some say no need to lap, some say lap everything.
It is easy to lap the rings why take the chance?
Rings have to mount to a base the base could effect the rings!!
You have a 1800.00 scope get a lapping bar and check it!

NF Rings
Night Force rings may be made to the tightest specs, but if your reciever is not perfectly flat,your bases not perfertly flat, your torque wrench not the same as the one at the factory than any little change can make the best rings out of round just a little bit. My point being it doesn't take but a little change to make a differance. So lap the rings to be sure after they are torqued on your gun.

The price of the rings has nothing to do with them needing to be lapped or not. Like what was said before, if your reciever is not perfect the base will warp to fit it when you tighten the screws. This is why I epoxy bed all my picitiny bases stress free. I also lap almost all of the rings I mount a scope to. The 15 minutes it takes gives me piece of mind that my customers are getting the best job possible, and once it's done I know it wont shift, mar or move.

MidwayUSA - Wheeler Engineering Scope Ring Alignment and Lapping Kit 30mm
Pretty cheap. Some manufacturers kits don't come with the alignment bars--just the lapping bars. These Wheeler kits have the alignment bars so you know for sure when to stop and not remove any more material than necessary. Good luck.
