W, just so you don't get the wrong idea. I think the ACI is a super bit of kit.
The fact that it has a NSN is good. It should be on General Issue, but it is not as yet on general. It has a NSN that is concurrent with a local purchase item and not an NSN concurrent with a General issue item. We are just argueing about word choice here. It is on issue to some Spec Force units in the British Military. The first ones to get anything like this are the SAS, Marines and Para's or units on active duty.
If you look at the review of the ACI by the Brit Sniper which is spread around the web, it states that he bought his ACI from Global Rifle in the UK and not that he was issued with it.
Tell you what i have 2 British Infantry Regiments within 30 miles of my house, I will take my rifle, complete with Badger mount and ACI along to see the Officer / SNCO in charge of marksmanship / Sniper ops, and if he says, ah, we already have those. Then i will post the fact here and i will send you a crate of German Beer. If they don't have them i will pass on contact details or have Marty send me a bunch. Hows that, your on a no loose situation.
Don't get me and Brown Dog wrong, we wheren't questioning you or the product, we where questioning the Military supply system and defining the difference between local purchase and General or / Standard issue.
Pete: By the way, when you visit your local military unit, call in the NAAFI and get my case of beer (even though I don't drink) if indeed these are front line fighting units, and have been issued with the .338 Lapua, they will have been issued with the ACI's, & 34 mm Rings, (NATO Stock No. 1005 992533460), (MPN ACI34MR).
Don't forget my private challenge...
BTW, just send the beer, (probably best in an Amercian case) to my Anchor Crank'n bud, Froggy. Doverstrike gets the credit for that term.
W. i live bang in the middle of 4 Armoured Brigade. We have The Duke of Wellingtons Regt and 1Bn Scotts Guards. I hunt with an officer from Guards and with an A mech attached to the Dukes. Both units are on deployment at the moment but i will be in to see the rear party on Monday, i know at least one unit Armourer will be on rear party in both Barracks and if the units have the ACI the Regimental Armourer will have fitted em to the rifles( I know cos i spent 10 years doing that job). I know the Dukes had never seen an ACI until showed em one a couple of months back.
I think we are just talking about the difference between standard or general issue and special issue and or local purchase.
I hope i am proved wrong and they are on general issue, they should be. If they are i will be mighty impressed. Unfortunately i know the Brit logistics and supply system, and i doubt that an ACI is fitted to every sniperrifle within the Brit Army, as would be the case if the thing was on General or standard issue.
Its all by the by, the piece of equipment is excellent, it is a must for every sniper, it should be on every sniper and designated marksman rifle throughout NATO.
I am in contact with these units in this garrison often as ive been doing the gunsmithing for the garrison hunting / shooting club for the last 14years or so. I certainly haven't seen an ACI issued to these lot yet, it may be that they get them when they deploy, but as i said, that ain't general or standard issue. so you can't claim that. In use with British snipercurrently in Iraq and Afganistan is a whole different kettle of fish in choice of words and thats what Brown Dog was getting at..Anyway, i will go and see on monday, and i will certainly be trying to convince any shooters in germany that they need one, general issue or not. Let you know what i find out ok..
Pete: As you know there is a difference between the mechanized units, (who will be receiving new kit shortly) and the front line fighting units. Regardless, the British Forces have had the ACI for Two Full Years; and they have for the most part, been mounted onto the WS's by the Shooters themselves.
BTW, have they, (the MOD) decided on their new SWS? I think not. But for certain, (and you probably are aware of this) they will be Super Magnum .338 Lapua's and the ACI will be included in the package, and on all new Sniper rifles. As I stated before, regardless of how it was read, the ACI is for certain, issued equipment period.
Anyway, Thank you for the kind words about the ACI.
