I've never used a bipod before, but was considering one to use while shooting benchrest. Thought it would work better and be more stable than a front bag. Am I about to make a mistake???

Yes, that's not really the application. There is a lot of special gear for shooting from the bench and almost all of it is superior to a Harris Bi-pod, which is primarily for field shooting....hunting situations, etc.

A front bag is much more stable than any bipod, however in the field a bipod can help you make some amazing shots.

Steyr mannlicher has recently come up with a tactical rifle in 308 that carries an integral fiberglass bipod, folds into the stock. However I do not know how rigid it is.
