277 Allen Mag w/ 195 WC ULD RBBT

Well I have finally got around to shooting the 195 grain bullets in my 277. After talking to Kirby and Richard, this will be the bullet of choice for my wifes cow moose hunt. So I packed up the rifle and chrono and went to my shooting spot yesterday. The wind was gusting a bit from my 6 and sometime from my 5.

This first picture is of my overall groups.

This is of the 97 grain group. I pulled shot 3 and I marked it. 1,2 and 4 were right there. Velocity averaged about 3150.

Last is the 98 grain group. I pulled shot 1 and marked it. Velocity averaged ~3200.

Overall I was happy with 2 of the loads. Any thoughts, comments, suggestions? Should I play with seating depth, primers, or powder? I have not done much load developement so not sure what to do. Maybe load 98 grains again and move to 500 yards?

Tonight I will finish the rest of my testing with 100 grains up to 103. There are no signs of pressure yet. Effortless bolt lift. So more tomorrow.

I'm already to sight the big girl in and make a couple of shots for the drop chart and go hunting next tuesday.......

I agree that the 195 is the choice for Moose or anything else you wish to thump.

I plan on using them exclusively for every thing. I figure that I will get more confident/accustomed to the traj that way.

I'm looking forward to your load data. (Even though mine is a lil' peckerwood 270 AM. The more the info is spread around the less shots everyone has to make.

From the shooting I've done, with those straight cases when things get sticky pressures may be 'really' high. W/100gr 869 in mt 270 AM w/the one 169 gr WC I had I got 3396 which is very near the highest one wants to go.

Isn't the 869 faster than the WC872. Not sure if I mentioned that was the powder I was using or not. I used Fed 215M primers.

I plan on using the 195's for everything as well. Should pound those mule deer real good. You got a buck spotted yet?

No need for your 169s. There are some in the mail from Kirby.

I'm not experienced with WC872. US 869 is easier to come by & I tho't I'd start with it. I like it's clean burning feature though it is a few more bucks than 872.

Yep, I have some bucks spotted. My son and I go to this 'certain' place where it is pretty much like a canned hunt.

We sleep on top then hoof it about 250 yds over to Point B and set up the matts, spotters and range finder. Its quite fun. This will be our first dedicated LRH season. Here are some pics. We shoot from Point B. One guy watches south the other watches north. Then the other fella spots for the one who sees the first 'shooter'. Which is anything w/horns and aways away (unless it's got BIG horns then a 50 yd shot will be taken [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img])

That is what I thought.

872 is a dirty sucker. But 5 bucks a pound is pretty good.

I see you are from Black Foot. I will be coming through next weekend for my wifes moose hunt. We will be out of Idaho Falls. Maybe if schedules align we could link up. Always nice to put a name to a face.

Hey srhaggerty,

Man that 98gr load sure looks promising. I would give it a whirl out to some extended ranges, and see how it pans out. You might still have to play with the seating depth a touch, but from what I see there your definatly on the right track.

That 872 works good and burns a little cleaner as it gets stoked up. The cleaning part is going to happen anyway, so you might as well get the better load density in the process.

Using the 195's in my standard .270 AM I didn't even consider using the 869. With the temps we were having and pressures I got using the 169.5's, I didn't figure it would be worth it. Now I doubt it will ever be tried.
