110FP 30-06 range report & bullet advice needed. *pics*
So I got out of work a little bit early today and went to the range with my savage 110FP in 30-06 among a few other guns. I recently put on a badger 20MOA base and switched scopes to a Nikon buckmaster 6-18 that was on another rifle.
I needed to sight in the gun and just for giggles printed out a couple of ballistic charts for handloads similar to the loads I was taking with me. It's a really windy day here and it's the kind that blows my pickup all other the road so while I'm driving to the range I'm thinking that this won't be the day I try to hit the 1000 yard target.
I get to the range, sight in at 200 yards, then use my charts and I'm pretty close at 700 yards. Then I try for 800 yards ok, then 900 yards ok, then I actually hit the target at 1000 yards using my Savage 110FP in 30-06. Beyond changing the stock nothing has been done to this rifle. The wind was bad and kept changing directions on me so it was a good day for me to learn how much the wind really effects shooting at that far.
The bullets I used today in my handloads were 168gr matchkings, 168gr Tipped triple shocks, 150gr triple shocks, and 180gr triple shocks. I'd rather just have one bullet that I used for both hunting and fun at the range, but I don't know what one.
What bullet would you use for shooting at the range & hunting?
Couple pictures for you.
I put my hand on this one so people would something to compare size to. Sorry about the fly fishing gloves, but it was cold out.

Matchkings for price and BC, but I'd consider Bergers.

Everything I've read about hunting big game with matchkings isn't good. It's one thing if you're going to pop a ground hog, but another if it's a deer, bear, or elk.

Matchkings and big game. Always sure to get a lively discussion!
I suspect that those that make good shots are happy, and those that lose animals tend to blame the bullet.
Most bullets have their advocates and their detractors...the same goes for SMK's
I have seen enough pictures of big game kills from those that like the SMK's to make me want to try them!
