Stiffening a Savage forend?
Good afternoon gentlemen. I have been lurking and reading for over a year and finally decided to register. I have question that may very well have been discussed before, yet I thought I would ask it anyway.
I am shooting a Savage 12 BVSS in .300 WSM. I absolutley love the way it shoots, but have noticed what I would consider an unexcaptable amount of forend flexing. I am sure this is effecting my POI under some conditions. I fully realize that the factory stock is not the best quality, yet I would like to try to "stiffen" it before replacing it. Any recommendations from those who have done it before? I don't believe that an epoxy mixture filling of the voids under the barrel channel will be enough. Maybe I'm wrong. Any advice you could give would be appreciated. Thanks, Dirty Steve |

Re: Stiffening a Savage forend?
I had the same concern when i first got my M10FP, I took to mine with sandpaper and gave it an extra 3-5mm clearance and I've never had any trouble with it. I remember reading a tutorial, might of been on savageshooters.com, where guy glued Ford 302ci push rods into the forend, heh, fords are good for something after all! Re: Stiffening a Savage forend?
some people have used super light but very stiff graphite arrow shafts in routed channels that are then glass bedded.

Re: Stiffening a Savage forend?
You say you have a 12BVSS, the BVSS has a laminate stock and I do not see how that could be flexing... but anyways, you can stiffen the synthetic stock using two pieces of 3/8" aluminum rod, epoxied into the forearm, but from what I hear it is better to go ahead and invest in a quality aftermarket stock, because to truly keep the forend from flexing, you would need to extend the rod all the way back into the magazine cutout... Oh BTW you have to be careful saying "savage" around here... you never know who might be watching

Re: Stiffening a Savage forend?
Correction on the model, FVSS (synthetic stock). Sorry for the mix up. I don't care of others opinions of the brand of my rifles. It shoots, and I could afford it. Dare I say I shoot an old M77 tang-safety Ruger too? Heaven forbid!, such blasphemy. I will admit, it has had a lot of work, but it shoots.
Thanks for the replies. Dirty Steve |
