Poor mans throat saver
Sometimes you buy/build a rifle and just want to go shoot it before you buy all of the accessories
needed to properly break it in and clean it.
This has happened to me more than once and waiting 8 to 10 days to get a throat saver is to
long so I make one for the rifle temporarily by taking the test fire brass (A hotter than normal
load) and drilling the primer pocket out with a drill .010 thousandths larger than the bullet
Then I chamfer the drilled hole to help start patches and brushes.
Insert the modified case in the chamber and start cleaning.
After cleaning insert the bolt and let the extractor remove it. (This only works on rifles that
the extractor can climb over the rim when closing).
The inside of the neck guides the rod and minimises wear from the rod.
If there is not one available for your caliber you can make a permanent one buy drilling the
hole large enough to thread and install a 8 to 12" tube with a inside diameter slightly larger
than the bore(Use a sized case for this and use a slightly larger expander ball).
Both work well and will save the throat of your chamber.
