Poll- 270 win, 280 Rem or 6.5-06

Hey everybody

I am having a custom rifle built and wondering what your thoughts are on these calibers. I do reload so the 6.5-06 wont be a problem for me. I am drawn to it because of the high BC and low recoil but hey when you look at a nosler AB 140gr the BC isnt that far ahead of from the 140gr 270 AB. Rifle will be built on a rem long action, HS precision and rock creek barrel. thanks in advance!

I would love to hear your reasons for your vote? Who knows, as fast as I turn over rifles it might be on the classifieds here soon!

Re: Poll- 270 win, 280 Rem or 6.5-06

Generally speaking, I would choose the 280 or 6.5 over the 270. Reason: BC

The 280 is a great cartridge (I have one: My 280 - Updated! ) and you can shoot 168 and 180grain bullets at good velocities with a barrel as short at 24".

The 6.5-06 is another great choice as you can get the 130 and 140 grain bullets going screaming fast (3100+).

I would lean towards the 280 as no fire forming of brass would be required. that's just my preference though.

Re: Poll- 270 win, 280 Rem or 6.5-06

I just picked up my 6.5-06 1 1/2 weeks ago. It likes the 140 gr Bergers at just over 3000 FPS. Comfortable to shoot. I'll tell you more about it after this years hunting season. I have a .270 and .270WSM. I find myself not using them. Wanted lower recoils w/ good BC's so I went to the 6.5's. I think that I'm really going to like thenew toy. I agree to go w/ either the 6.5 or .280. Best of luck. Bruce

Dig the 6.5 and 270 not much use for the 280. The 6.5 with a 140 Berger is hard to top though at range a 160+gr bullet from the 270 just hits harder which I like since we mostly target elk. They are all so close it would be hard to pick on except on personal preference which for me fall to the 270.

I guess I am a little surprised the 270 is pulling away a little. Then again maybe I shouldnt be.

I think the 6.5 would be a cool rifle and I plan to rebarrel an old Ruger 25/06 to that cartridge sometime but if I were to have only one of the three offered it would be the 270Win hands down. I am sure any of these cartridges would not let the shooter down.
