New rifle question

I think I have the miss talked into letting me get a new toy for Christmas. I’m looking at getting something in the 7mm-08. I was hopping to get a little feed back on this caliber. I’ll primarily be using it for long range plinking, varmint and mule deer hunting. I would also like to have a rifle that my oldest boy could use for elk hunting when he gets old enough to hunt.

the 7-08 is a fine round and will get you out to some pretty long ranges using good match bullets and is capible of killing Elk when the correct bullet is used. the problem I have found is that very few rifle makers chamber their "accurate" rifles in this round , Ihave found that it is a very un-apperciated calber , its not big and powerfull , doesen't shoot bullets out at near light speed , its just not a "sexy" round anymore.

The good old 308 would also be a good choice as their are many factory LR offerings in this caliber as well as factory ammo loaded for it. The 308 is fully capible fo killing an Elk with a 165-180gr Nosler Partition bullet so long as the ranges are kept reasonable.

I have a Rem 7mm-08 in a light mountain rifle and it shoots good. Has killed many deer and antelope to 300 yds and a cow elk at 150 yds. I really like the new Savage in this caliber with the accu-trigger. Should be a great gun.

My son shoots it, he's 13 now and can shoot better than me. Must be the eyes! He dumped an antelope last year at 260 yds, his 1st shot at big game.
