Re: My new USMC M40A1 knock-off rifle

[ QUOTE ]
There are quite a few pictures of the Winchester model 70 sniper rifles used in the early 60's.

[/ QUOTE ]

There were many varieties of Winchesters used in VN, some were supplied by the military, and some were purchased in Guam from sporting goods stores.

There were '06 sporter weights all the way to '06 Full M70 target rifles. Most were fitted with 1-1/4" 8x Unertl target scopes, or 10X Lyman Super Target Spots.

I have a 30-06 M70 target with a 10x Lyman Super Target Spot, from VN that is in beautiful condition... stock needed to be steamed and refinished (polyurathane).

VSSF

That's a nice looking M40, the web sling is nice and matches the pictures I have of that era.

Are you going to put a USO or Unertl MST100 on it??

I have a USO MST100 sitting on a shelf in my safe waiting for my 1990's era M40A1 to arrive. I hear USO is now making the Unertl style M40A1 base also... damn expensive toys when they're done.

Spades

Thanks, it's a fine piece of period style equipment.. I'll take it deer and maybe bear hunting, I'm sure it'll perform well.

Dave
As I remember the stadia wires were were predicated on 16"( deer size) and bracketing the deer with the power ring gave the range,I remember testing the scope this way.During the Vietnam war the sniper rifles were zeroed at 500 yds. At longer ranges the was for the hold was on the head = center of mass hit.
For close in shots aim for the crotch = center om mass hit.Hits were recorded out to 1600 yds on charles!
