Lever Gun Question

A while back I picked up a Henry Golden Boy in .22 lr. Now I've decided it needs a big brother, mainly for whitetails. The problem lies in caliber choice, I need someone to talk me into either the 30-30 or 44 mag. So lets hear it which one and why.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Lever Gun Question

The 30-30 will give you far more range, especially with the new FTX bullets. They make it a legitimate 300 yard gun. If you really want to set it up, look at the 308 Marlin Express. There is really no comparison between the 44 mag and 30-30 using modern bullets unless shots will always be 100 yards or shorter.

That being said, a .45 Colt or 44 mag lever sure is fun to shoot! I enjoy my Henry 45 colt at the range.

Re: Lever Gun Question

In all honesty the 308 ME did really peak my interest, but I really want to stick to a Henry to match the Golden Boy. That leaves me choosing between a .357, .44 mag, .45, Long Colt or the 30-30. Since the .45 LC and .357 were the more anemic of the four that leaves me with the .44 or 30-30. And thats where I'm stuck.

I understand....there are 4 Henrys and 2 Marlins in my safe. Lever guns can become an addiction

Re: Lever Gun Question

I have one of each caliber in the Marln. The 44 makes a good bear gun for bow hunting summer camping and just a nice short range saddle gun. That holds a lot of lead. I did sack a coyote at 200ish yards with it once.
Everyone should own a 30-30! I learned this by pure amazement! When I was cool and guided hunters, on most days the guides would shoot at lunch. We shot off hand at a 2x2 piece of steel at 400 yards. This hill billy from back east that guided with us could hit that damn thing on almost every shot with his rusted ol ugly 94 with iron sights, that had put meat on the table for 3 generations!
I went to town and bought one just as ugly in Marlin!
I find that I shoot both about the same amount and they are both easy and cheap to reload for.

Re: Lever Gun Question

I've got a 444 Marlin that i can't say enough good about. I don't even use my 30/30 any more.
