Re: History question

I think it was 1964 when I bought a mail order Winchester model 1200 from Sears Roebuck & Company and there was no paper work. ($124.00). I think things really changed in 1968 with that gun control act. I’m not sure as I never bought another gun out of a store until recently

Re: History question

That's right, I sweated hard in the cotton fields to earn enough money to buy my first gun. It was a Stevens 311 side by side and we ordered it from the Sears Catalog in 1958 for $66.00. It was delivered by the mailman.

Re: History question

Ahh, the Sears Catalog

There was a time when you could order an entire house from the catalog...and everything to go in it too!

edge.

Sorry for the hijack

Re: History question

Wait until BHO gets into the Whitehouse. You won't be able to get a brass case in the mail. But than again after he "redistributes" all of the wealth, you won't be able to afford to shoot so it won't matter anyway!

Let's all go back to the 50's and just go hunting. :>)

Re: History question

The Gun Control Act of 1968 came about because of the alleged lone gunman Lee Harvey Oswald(google him). Up until then you could buy thru the mail no problems, no questions, no one cared. I bought my first deer rifle, a 99 Sav .308, in 1964 thru the mail, I was 14. And my first long range rifle, a LH 264 Win Mag, thru the mail in 1966, I was 16. After the CIA killed the redhead in Dealy Plaza(google that) then all the paperwork came about and a massive Federal bureaucracy and phone call center in WV was created. The waiting time is now ...45 minutes.

The commies won that one. But if you join the NRA and pay your dues it will be their last victory over the 2nd Amendment.

Re: History question

my dad ordered 2 surplus rifles right out of the NRA magazine back in the early 60's. they were springfield 03-A3's and he paid 12$ apeice. i remember helping him wash the cosmoline off them with gasoline when they came in. he also ordered surplus ammo in the same order for next to nothing. this was the rifle he had carried in the service and boy could he shoot them. he ground the barrel band off the front end and sporterized the stocks. later on he had the recievers drilled and tapped for scope mounts. this was the rifle i first hunted with. they were amazingly accurate considering the had a barrel with only 2 grooves.
