Gunsmith Question - Tikka 595

I've got a pre-T3 Tikka called the "Whitetail" or model 595. The rifle is accurate but has always had a feeding problem. The magazine will feed OK if held tightly into the receiver. However, if its not held in, it will relax downward a fraction of an inch which allows the bolt to slip off the case head and ride over the body.

There is a tiny spring loaded plunger that the magazine pushes upward when it is inserted. This plunger is always applying some downward pressure to the magazine flange and may be part of the reason that the magazine sits out a bit.

How can the problem be eliminated?
What does the plunger actually do when it is pused in by the insertion of the magazine?

i think the plunger is to push the mag out when you press the tabs to remove the mag.

is the mag going in enough when you insert it. as when i have bedded a few of the magazine rifles you have to make sure that they feed other wise you get the sort of thing you describe. in other words it sounds like your bottom metal work has not been let in enough. or it could be that your mag is not going in far enough in to the mag holder.

if when you close your bolt and apply up wards pressure on the mag box it feeds OK.

and if it dose not when no pressure is applied

then i would say it wants letting in a bit.

so it could be a mag to bottom metal work fit prob

or the hole lot has not been let in enough.

i would not say it was a plunger problem. but it is hard to say with out seeing it.

Thanks for the reply. You are probably correct about the purpose of the plunger because it doesn't seem to serve any other purpose. Unfortunately, the plunger is at the rear of the magazine causing the magazine to can't down slightly at the rear. Exactly where you need the magazine to be up tight against the bottom metal (plastic).

I have the original 3-shot plastic flush fitting magazine and a factory 5-shot metal magazine but they both present the same problem.

it does sound like to me that the hole of the mag and bottom metal wants letting in a bit.

how much tension is on the mag spring. you can take out the plat that the case sits on and stretch the spring a bit.
if you load up the mag with the maximum it will hold do you still have the same problem,because if you do stretching the spring a bit will not help. or dose it only happen when you have 1 or 2 left in.

if it is a metal mag you can open the tabs up slightly to let the case sit a bit higher. but mine was a plastic mag.

The bottom metal (plastic) is flush with the wood stock. Actually, its a rather nice fit. I guess that it could be recessed a bit. It wouldn't improve the wood/metal fit but probably would relieve the problem.

Removing the plunger would also help a bit but a fully loaded mag would also cause the magazine to sit in its lowest possible position.

The problem is the same with the magazine partially or fully loaded.

I had one other thought. The magazine latch could be lengthened so that it holds the magazine up tight against the bottom. I'll have to look closer at this after the hunting season.

as i think it sounds like you have hit the nail on the head.
i wounder if the latch part is just that bit to short.
hope you get it sorted with out to much hassle. and sorry i was not more help.
