getting an FFL?

I have been contemplating getting an FFL and starting to sell guns on the side. Can someone who has an FFL give me some advice on where to start? Can you have an FFL without a shop? How much does it cost and where do I go to get one?

My friend got one with no problem until our county zoning administrator found out. She figured that even a few guns being sold required his house/shop be rezoned. It was complicated because it was his house and zoned residential. They had a hearing and I don't know what he ended up with but he does sell a gun once in a while. It was a pain for a while.
