Dry Firing?

Is it ok to dry fire center fires? I oftern practice sitting & off hand by dry firing when i can't get to the range, Just wondering if i'm doing damage to my firing pin?
I know it wrecks rimfires because the pin hits steal. But one of my mates who does alot of trap shooting told me it's bad for shotguns too and thats why alot of people buy 'Snap caps' [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] .

Well if you look at the basic desgine of the firing pin and what it his in the bolt then it doesn't look that bad. Most firing pins have a reasonably big shoulder that holds its protrousion the same. Now you have two pieces of steel slamming together at high speed eventualy its gonna cause some problems.
