Chasing the lands on a 6.5-284

Considering the erosion on this barrel burner, when throating a new chamber how far should the bullet be seated past the shoulder/boat tail junction to allow for erosion to maintain a soft seat?

Re: Chasing the lands on a 6.5-284

Either the boattail or the pressure ring of a flat base should be just up into the neck past the shoulder neck junction.

You will find that different bullets have different lengths of bearing surface and how far forward the come to meet the lands. If it erodes a little, you can change to a longer bullet and still be in the lands.

having said that, for single shot loaded bullets, in 1k BR, it is not uncommon for as little as .200 of bullet be to in the neck.

When I got this rifle throated I had a Sierra 142 MK just touching the lands with the boat tail/bearing surface junction at the neck/shoulder junction. So from what your saying this wont be a problem? After 418rds the throat has eroded .031"
