Birth control for Deer!?

Maryland has become the first state to approve the use of Gonacon, a deer birth control product, but the state’s director of wildlife said Friday he can’t imagine it ever being used in what he termed the open landscape.
“This is the only immuno-contraceptive for deer that has federal approval,” said Paul Peditto, director of the Wildlife and Heritage Service. “It was developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency.

Its BS to say the least. We have alot of parks and private property here where I live that dont allow hunting. We also have a ton of guys with no where to hunt. The town I live in had a vote to allow bow hunters in the parks to cut the heards down from over 110 deer per acre. But they could not agree and the idea of birth contol got brought up that was 6 years ago and I have yet to hear anything more about it.

Yep! It was my thought as well. <sigh> I guess this is what happens when bureaucrats have way too much free time on their hands

Before they can start "Darting" deer with it, ANYWHERE that the deer could be shot and consumed by a hunter, poacher, or any one else, they are going to have to get the blessing of the FDA that this stuff is SAFE FOR HUMANS TO EAT.
What happens if the "Don't Eat This Deer" tag falls off?

Interesting thought. I really hadn't considered it from that perspective. I wonder if eating such tainted venison by human women would have the same effect.

I just reread the article again. It would cost $1000 per animal and is effective only 80% of the time.

“It will cost up to $1,000 to apply it to a deer,” Peditto said. The deer must first be shot via dart gun to tranquilize it before Gonacon can be injected. EPA requires that the deer be tagged so that it can be identified as having been treated. Another tag will state that the meat of the animal should not be consumed by humans.
“It works on 80 percent of the deer that are injected,” Peditto said. “The following year, however, half of those injected deer will become pregnant unless hand-injected a second time.”

$1000 per doe to stop it breeding for one year... And they need to be tagged not safe to eat. How much stupider can you get?? If you need to tranquilize em first, just slit their throat, save a lot of money... Donate meat to homeless shelters. Seeing how gov likes making stuff unnessasiriky complicated, the above would work fine. A downright sensible answer would be allow and encourage bow hunting, then charge a fee (like normal) for the license and maybe even turn a small profit.
But hey this is the People's Republic of Marylandistan after all..
