1000 yard target size - What size target do you shoot at ??

Just about to make up some swinging steel 1000- 1200 meter targets.

Just wondering what size centre circle should I paint on them ?

I was thinking around 10 ", but just wanted to see what everyone else is trying to strive for. Keeping in mind this is a hunting rifle being used for practice to take deer cleanly with 20 " square vital zone.

I shoot at a 8 and a half by eleven sheet of paper with a 3 inch black stick on bull.

Gongs are fun to ring but a group for the record is much more useful.

Do you find it hard to see a 3" dot at 1000 yards. I'm sure the number of guys that could land a group on that dot with a bipod and bag would be fairly small. Is this a benchrest target for a benchrest gun or your std hunting rifle setup ?

We have a 4in and a 7 inch Gong at 1200 yards ---- lay of the land required 1200 rather than 1K even though that is the range I shoot at.. Just put a nice coat of paint before you start and you can see exactly where you hit.

Forget about painting a black circle in the middle. It will only hide hits. Paint your gong pure white (because it shows up the best at long range) and let your eye center the crosshair for the sighter shot, see where it goes, then "aim for the spot". Or in other words, begin to shoot into the group. The previous hits will give you a black spot to aim for.

An APS 270 AM w/4.5-14 Weaver Tactical and a 338 RUM Rem 700 w/SuperSniper 16X. (I just gotta upgrade that SS and put the Weaver on the RUM and something super hooty on the AM)

Shooting prone/shooting mat and rear beanie bag which is my standard LRH setup from a hide/shooting spot. I learned a lot this past hunting season so if that's what LRH is that's the way I'm going to practice.

Oh, and BTW, I set the target in front of a 36" gong that a 50 cal won't penetrate, just so I can here the Thwack. Actual gong distance is 1090 yards, dictated by terrain; the target is 5 yards closer. I'm not quite good enough with the wind to always get that first shot on the paper. First shot on paper is my goal. When I get good, if anyone ever gets that good I want the shot on the 3" bull. Yeah, right! But hey, I can dream......

As I recall our NRA 1000 yard targets have a 44" black, that's the 8 ring and in. Nice and big so it is at least visible when shooting iron sights. Doggone thing looks downright tiny when the target is viewed through sights.

With a scope of course, all is much better! The 10 ring is about 20" dia, and the X-ring is about 10" dia. It takes a world class shooter to keep 'em all in the 10 ring, particularly if there's any wind to speak of. I haven't ever done it - that's for sure. Mind you, I'm talking NRA prone shooting, with only the sling for support, no bench, no bipod, no bags.

The F-class guys get a much smaller target. Believe their X-ring is only 5" diameter at 1000 yards, but I could be wrong on that one. Both standard and F-class targets are run up and shot at the same time at my local club, which has only a 600 yard range - and those new F-class targets look incredibly tough with their 3" X-ring at 600 yards.
