When a barrel is at the end of its life

I have heard many different numbers for barrel life in the 300RUM. When the time comes and the barrel is no longer shooting, what would most people do?? get another 300RUM barrel or upgrade to a 338 Lapua or is it a 338 Edge that requires a 300RUM action??

Re: When a barrel is at the end of its life

The secret is determining when it is really done?

I have one that I thought was at the end of its life.

I ran a Tubbs Final Finish process through it which appeared to have given it new life. I'll be shooting it tomorrow to validate.

Had it bore scoped by a local smith who said there was more than 50% life left.

At this point I'm not sure of what to do.

If shooting says shes shot out, there is enough barrel to set it back and retain the same cartridge.

Indicators are (from a shot out 270 Win barrel):
  • Loss of accuracy
  • Heavy copper fouling
  • Reduction in MV
  • Reduction in pressure
  • Most probably a drop in bc. Just guessing on this one. No personal experience.
