As for that 52 Inch Barrell you'll need a tractor trailor to haul it to Williamsport.
I just hope it doesn't turn out like Randy in VA's 408. OOOOOOOOOO was that hitting below the belt?
Heck, I'd like to see a Long gun with a 52 inch barrel I do believe though you'd have to set up a couple of feet back off the fireing line so that you are actualy shooting 1000 yds though.
Boyd, I think you have these ol Codgers worried, Seeing how they are up to there OLD tricks.
As for the topic of this tread I say it's already been sead cause I can't prove otherwise.

Good luck on your project.

Re: Whats the "Hottest" 30 caliber?

Wyo,

Cost is an issue, to a degree. I don't plan on spending 5k for the rifle. As to the energy levels, I am not much on energy levels for killing deer. I have proved that theory wrong to many times already. It depends on the type of bullet used as well. I won't be using a match king, I will be using a Groove Bullet since I make them. It weighs 188 grains.

I may just go with the 300 RUM improved. Seems simple enough.

Maybe 1500 yards is beyond the reach. I may have to limit myself to 1200, not sure yet.

Did you ever get the chance to shoot the Groove Bullets you got?

Most of the time, so far anyhow, the faster we load up Groove Bullets, the better they shoot.

1200 yrds? My 300 WSM will go that far.
I've seen D.C.'s Tomahawk go to 1600.
I think your gonna be happy with your choise.
You should see D.C. when he shoots his Tomahawk, He looks like a kid in a candy store with a hand full of nickles.

Re: Whats the "Hottest" 30 caliber?

SHaky,

188 gr bullet..hmm.. in a 30 cal.

any idea what the B.C. would be and are they a "VLD" type bullet?

The "Tommy" will get them moving for sure but I think a bullet that light may be able to reach max velocity from a standard RUM as well...

I'd go 30" barrel though.. that way when ya burn the throat you can just cut it back instead of buying a new barrel...

I havn't had a chance to test those bullets yet.. after the holidays I hope to see what they do....

Re: Whats the "Hottest" 30 caliber?

I would go with the 300 Tomahawk. 1:10 Twist 30" barrel and use a heavier bullet. A lot of the guys on this board have them and have great success with it.

Shaky

I know of a 300 Wetherby Stainless Sendarow with ouly 50 rounds down the 10 twist 26" fluted barrel. $675.00
Ray could take it to 300 RUM Imp "Tomahawk" and put a KDF brake on it quite easily?

Later

Re: Whats the "Hottest" 30 caliber?

Thanks for the input guys, it is "all" appreciated.

Rick,

The 188gr LR Groove Bullet has an esitmated BC of .805. I say estimated, because we don't have the actual data, yet.

DC,

Thanks for that info. I will let you know.

I still haven't decided on what cartridge to go with. I have a couple of other things in mind as well but I am waiting for some test results to see which avenue I should go.
