Re: whats the biggest barrel you can hang off a remington 700 long action
Bigrich954rr,
I personally recommend to my customers that a Lilja NBRSA HV Taper out to 30" finish length is as heavy as I recommend hanging off a Rem receiver with a conventional pillar bedding system.
I am not a huge fan of barrel bedding pads ahead of the receiver. If your going to bed a rifle conventionally, and use a match grade barrel, there should really not be anything touching the barrel in anyway to adversely effect the barrels performance.
This is a barrel that weights right at 7 lbs with a 30" finish length and is as heavy as I personally recommend using with the Rem 700 with a totally free floated barrel.
With a 1.250" straight cylinder, I recommend limiting barrel length to 27" with a conventional bedding system.
For longer and heavier barrels I recommend a Barrel Bedding V-Block system such as my APS V-Block. With this, you can use any barrel diameter or length you want but you are also limited to what stocks will allow the inletting of the Barrel Bedding V-Block in the forend.
Good Shooting!!
