What velocity with 300 Wby 200 gr AB in 28" barrel?

I'm considering a build for an elk rifle and I'm looking at the 300 Weatherby. I already have a 300 RUM but it is a little heavy for me at 15 lbs. I'd like to shoot the 200 gr Accubond and I'm hoping that I could get 3100 fps with the 300 Wby out of a 28" barrel without running my brass too hard. The rifle would be set up with an extended box mag to take full advantage of the case capacity. Is this too optimistic? I'm sure 3000 fps would be easily obtained.

I'm thinking long run on the chambering. If I decide to sell this rifle in 10 years, don't know if the RUM will still be popular or easily obtainable brass and ammo but the Weatherby is well established and has a pretty good powder capacity.

OK I played around on Quickload for ya.and this is what I was able to come up with.but will add that the loads are all max loads for the data you gave.28 inch barrel and OAL @3.600 with a 200gn Accubond

R22@78.5@3090fps
R25@81.5@3102fps
H4350@72.3@2985fps
H4831@77.3@3031fps
H1000@83.5@3086fps
Hretumbo@86.0@3084fps
IMR4350@71.5@2963fps
IMR4831@72.0@2995fps
IM7828@78.5@3104fps

now the choices of powder are what I have and loaded in a 300weatherby mag before.I all so load with some of the choices in my 300wm.just hope this is what you are looking for.maybe some one else will take a look to see if they come up with the same info as I did.but if not then I would use the info from me and load up to the data I have given you.again the loads I have posted for you are MAX LOADS the pressure is really HIGH for the loads given.so be smart when testing useing some one elses loads or info that has been given too you.

just hope a I was able to help.John

Thanks for the info, John!
Looks like I wasn't too far off. I'd rather run at 3000 or 3050 fps and not push the brass too hard, it would depend on the individual barrel. I'll just have to see how things pan out.

I think the 300 RUM is here to stay, there are a lot of people shooting them. I shoot that bullet out of my 300 RUM, I get around 2900 fps and don't really see a need to try and squeeze a little more speed out of it. Accubond is a great bullet.

For what its worth, my .300 Wby runs a 200gr SMK @ 2940 out of a 28.5" tube, this load is nowhere near hot, 76gr RL 22, OAL 3.670 , I've never tried to push it any faster because it shoots very good. Killed a deer @ 557yds this year with this load.

I have several loads that get 3100 fps with a 200 grain bullet out of a 28" barrel. Yes, it can be done unless you happen to get a barrel on the slow side. I have six 300 wby's and can get 3100 fps out of some of my 26" barrels.
