Twist rate 180 Berger

Has anybody had any luck shooting the 180 grain VLD (.284) out of a 91/4 twist barrel?

Re: Twist rate 180 Berger

I'm shooting them out of my 9.25" twist Sendero SF 7mm STW. They shoot great for me.

In theory though, a 1:9 twist is more ideal for that heavy a bullet.

I haven't had a chance to shoot the 180's out of my Browning A-Bolt II 7Mag that has a 9.5" twist, but when I do, I'll let you know.

Re: Twist rate 180 Berger

Just to headline, the VLD's tend to be finicky about seating depth...So don't give up on them immediately.
If your rifle doesn't like the 180 VLD's I'd be interested in them, as my STW likes them.

Re: Twist rate 180 Berger

Here is Berger's twist calculator.

An SF of 1.1 or better should give you basic paper punching stability

An SF of 1.5 will give you terminal stability inside 500 yds

Beyond 500 yds you can get by with less than 1.5

Re: Twist rate 180 Berger

without stating air density, muzzle velocity, and target distance this thread isn't very useful.
