Re: Thoughts on Ruger Rifles?
I have owned and shot a number of Ruger rifles. They are great hunting guns! I am planning a Wyoming elk hunt next fall and I am already getting my guns ready for the hunt. On Thursday of this week I was out shooting two guns and trying to decide which one I would take on the hunt.
The two guns were both Ruger Mark II's. One a 7mm Rem Mag and the other a 300 WSM. Both are stainless steel with synthetic stocks. The 7mm Rem Mag is one of the best shooting guns that I own, and I own 5 Remingtons, and 2 Winchesters as well as a number of other Rugers.
My 300 WSM is very picky as to the load that it shoots well. It will shoot Barnes TSX bullets into 3/ 4 inch or less. It also shoots Berger 168 VLD's very well. Most other loads are not very good.
On the other hand my 7mm Rem Mag will shoot almost any load into less than 1 inch. I have worked up loads with 140 Barnes TSX, 160 Barnes TSX, 140 Nosler Accubond's and 160 Nosler Accubonds, that will all shoot into .5 or less.
I will agree that if you are developing a target rifle or a long range hunting rifle to shoot game at 500yds or more a Ruger may not be my first choice.
My Rugers feed very well. I know that if I have to take a second shot I can count on the next round to chamber. I have had two time when my Reminton 700 BDL failed to feed and I pulled the trigger on an empty chamber. My Reminton 700 BDL is a 7mm SAUM and I know that the short round is more difficult to feed.
So I will carry my Rugers and leave my Reminton at home.
