Re: Tell Us About Your 2009 Custom Rifle Build

Barrel brand: ER Shaw (got as kit through Brownells)
length: came in 24", cut to 22" w/ recessed target crown
profile: Heavy Magnum
coating: Cerakote barreled action, scope bases/rings
Action brand: Savage
model: 110
Brake brand: none... doesn't need it!!
Stock brand: Savage laminate (The stock was nice when I got the rifle, but had a lot of wear so I stripped it, added a good recoil pad, and am refinishing with hand-rubbed oil)
color: Green/Brown
Bottom metal: blind mag
Cartridge: 338'06 A-Square
Trigger: Reworked factory
Scope: Elite 3200 2-7x32mm w/ firefly reticle
Scope base and rings: Warne steel bases/perm attach rings, low height
Smith if already chosen: ME!- DIY project to help w/ cabin fever this winter
Expected weight of rig without scope and mount: ?
Approximate expected cost without scope and mounts: $800

I'm building this as a distraction from the shack nasties this winter. I bought the rifle last March and have been messing with it since... both on my bench and in my mind. I came across the Brownell's kit a while ago and that was the deciding factor. Just too cheap and "made to order" for me to pass up.

I've been accumulating black bear preference points here in Michigan for a few years and I'll take this with me to da UP when I seek to fill that tag. It was that trip I had in mind when I was pondering what to build. It'll be a nice rifle for elk in timber as well.

If this one goes as well as I expect next winter I'd like to take on a nearly identical DIY project. It'll start with a Remington 700 action and the ER Shaw short-chambered 338 RUM barrel that Brownell's offers. I'd finish-ream it to the Edge rather than the shorter RUM. Cerakote that too, but get a really nice synthetic stock that I'll finish and paint.

Autorotate, would that be plus the cost of the brake and action?
