An M1 is an M1 Garand which is a WWII semi automatic battle rifle chambered in .30-06 or newer National Match ones can be had in .308 Winchester. Are you referring to an M1A? An M1A is the civilian semi-auto version of the M-14 and can be bought in the SOCOM configuration with the 16" barrel, either version is .308 WIN. I would suggest buying an AR-15. They are a little cheaper and chambered for the .223 REM, which is cheaper, less recoil, and more practical on those little prairie dogs than the big .308 WIN.
