So Guys, What Seven?

Thinking about another custom. Im leaning towards the 7mm. I already have a good 700+ yard 7mm rem mag with 160 accubonds. What im after is the 7 rum or the 7 stw with a 1-8 twist so I could shoot the 180 bergers. Is one any better than the other. The Allen mag is a little to overbore. My chioces will be between these 2. Thanks

Re: So Guys, What Seven?

I would look at the 7 RUM and use the 200 ULD wildcats, using 180 you could use the 7 STW. The 7 RUM is not very efficent but will get you about 100+ fps using about 10 grains or so more powder. So if you're looking for the absolute most velocity it will be the RUM. Some people have started again using the 7-300 win mag and are reporting velocities equal or better than the STW. This seems to a super effecient caliber. I believe it was a fiftydriver post where he said using 168 gr use the 7 rem mag, 180 7 stw, 200 use the RUM. He has far more knowledge and expierence than I will ever have so I take what he says with high reguard

Both the 7 STW and the 7 Ultra are over bore cartridges, so if you are going to shoot the big bullets
go with the big RUM.

I have both, and the STW will hum the 140s and 160s. but the 7 Ultra does better with the 180s
because of case capacity and slower burning powder.

The 1 in 8 or 1 in 9 twist both work in the Ultra mag so If Berger recommends a 1 in 8 go with it.

You should check into the 7-300 win Mag. There has been a recent post on it. I must admit that it had me interested. I speaks of the advantages that it has over both the STW and RUM. Just food for thought. Nice thing is that you may be able to use existing 7mm Rem Mag dies for it.

Re: So Guys, What Seven?

For me it would be the STW all the way, not even the 7RUM can push a 140gr factory load to 2550fps at 500 yards, the STW can. Am not sure which one will burn up barrels faster??? I guess it all depends on how hot you load them.
I have a sendero 300RUM and if I had the money to do it I would get a 28 inch broughton barrel and have it rechambered to a 7MM STW. Heck I even tried to convince myself that I could afford to sell my sendero and get a nice light custom 7mm STW. This is just my opinion.

Re: So Guys, What Seven?

I think you have it backwards Firecat. The STW has less internal capacity compared to the 7 RUM. If pressures are the same the 7 RUM will beat the STW even with light 140 gr bullets.

7 MilMauser:

If you are considering a larger 7mm than the 7 rem mag be sure to get a long barrel. IMO at least 28" if you want to reap the advantages of the larger cases. I'd vote for the 7 RUM with a 30 or 32" barrel if I were to build one. Be sure to get enough twist for the heaviest bullets.

Be sure to come back and share your results!
