The 6.5 284 needs more barrel to reach its potential because of case size and powder used.
If you want a brush/short rifle with a 16 to 18" barrel I would recomend one of the shorter
cases and a short action.
The 308 size cases (243,260,7/08 and 308 do well with 18 to 20'' barrels.
The smaller 6.5x 47 sized cases will perform with 16 to 18'' barrels because with less case capacity
faster burning powder must be used to reach pressures and velocities. So a shorter barrel can
be used without to much unburnt powder.
The only way I know to use the larger cases in short barrels is to use heavy bullets (Like the
special purpose pistols do). The heaver bullet slowes velocity and allows more slow burning
powder to be used.
