Ruger Question

Hey Gang. New guy with what may be a dumb question that I need some help on.
I aquired a Ruger M77 / MARK II 308 Win. It has a Laminate stock with a wide forestock. The action and heavy barrel are a satin grey finish . Very clean . The problem is about the best it will do is around 1.5 to 2 " at a 100 yards. With several different factory loads I 've tried it only gets worse. The best was with reloads ( I don't have the specs on the reloads with me ) I let my buddy shoot it just to make sure it wasn't me and he had the same results.

Is this normal for a Ruger or is something wrong with this thing. I 'm really new to long distance stuff. I wanted this gun to be a 500-700 gun but with what I see right now I don't think it will happen. How would you that are in the know go about fixing this problem or should I just get something else?

Thanks for the info. Johnny

Great site BTW.

Hows the trigger on your ruger. Is it heavy with lots of creep? I have a ruger with a laminate stock & a heavy stainless barrel.(chambered in 300 win mag) I could not get much better groups out of mine with factory ammo. I recently started reloading and can put three shots in an inch at a hundred. I have to let the barrel cool between shots or the accuracy goes down. I am going to get a timney trigger because i hate the trigger on my ruger to heavy and lots of creep. This will help with accuracy as well.

The trigger isn't to bad at all. Very little creep and a fairly crisp break. I have a cheap Vanguard in 300 Weatherby Mag that I had the trigger adjusted on a little and Ruger still has a better feel in factory set.

I really expected alot better shooting out of this thing .

Thanks for the info . Keep it coming.

It could be a whole lot of things wrong with your rifle that makes it not shoot well. Bedding of the stock not exactly right, stock screws too tight or loose, is the barrel free floated? I personally have never seen a stock Ruger trigger that was good. It is very hard to shoot very tight groups with a 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 pound trigger that is common on Rugers. Also have you properly broken in the barrel yet? Many rifles do not shoot good right out of the box. It takes a couple of hundred rounds sometimes to get some rifles to really shoot. To get your best accuracy you need to hand load and do all the bench rest tricks to the load. Factory ammo is not going to cut it.

The gunsmith thing was kinda what I was thinking about doing but I'm wasn't sure what it should be doing already. I've talked to a few local guys but the opions are just too far apart from each other and I don't know of anyone around here playing over 300 yards. Does anyone know of a really good gunsmith close to Panama City Florida that I could get to look at this thing.?

What kinda money are we talking about to get one tuned up like your talkin about there STXHunter?

Thanks for the knowledge . Need all I can get.

Johnny

the smith work and parts ran me just shy of 1600 that includes the 200 and something the teflon coating cost you could true the action and get it bedded and a new trigger for a lot less a good bit of that money was in the barrel and stock and i thought i was going to die of old age before i got that mcmillian stock took over 6 months
