Rem 700P 338 Lapua stock change need help

Hello all,
I'm new to this site.I hope I'm in the right place? I've just purchased a Rem. 700P in 338 Lapua and i want to change out the stock. I don't care for the palm swell or the forend. looking for more of a traditional hunting stock. Has anyone changed out a stock on one. Midway has a HS precision pro series varmint and a bell and Carlson Alaskan II in 700BDL long action with mag barrel channel. I guess my question is will either of these stocks work since the lapua has a detachable box mag.
Thanks,

I think the pro series from HS has palm swells to. You have a 700p which is a bigger profile barrel. Most any stock you buy can be made to work by a gunsmith (MOST ANY). If it where me and its not thats alot of gun and I would be putting it into something from Tom Manners website maybe an MCST-1 or a Mcmillan HTG something like that.

I second the Manners stock. My T2 is excellent quality and is very comfortable to shoot. I would stay away from the HS because of the conversation that I had with them last summer when I was researching my custom build.

The Bell & Carlson stock could work. You may need to do some fitting (sanding, filing, etc). I bought a B&C from Midway, they claim to be drop in, but it was not. I spent a few hours sanding to get the action to drop in, then an hour cleaning the lug area and the action screw holes. Finally, I installed pillars and bedded the action. It was worth the work. I prefer the fit and feel of the B&C stock.

I am not familiar with the 700P stock, I thought I read that it has an aluminum chassis. If you do change stocks, be sure to stay with a stock that has a metal chassis.

Articman,

You might want to shoot it for a while. My guess is that the swell feels a little to blocky, and the forend feels a little wide. I can tell you from experience that after a while you may get to where you want it that way by choice.

Also, they are incredibally strong and durable. However, only you can pick what you prefer and thats the best part of all. Don't stop till you get what you like the best.

24 hour campfire has an ad for McM 4th of july sale.

I bought that same rifle for use as a hunting gun. The stock was nice for bench and prone work but for off the shoulder it was a bit bulky for my liking. I think you would like the McM HTG stock. It is pently sturdy for the gun, narrower grip, and a little nicer than the B&C that I have.

Just so you know, the McMillan 4th of July sale means you'll see your stock some time around Christmas. Yeah... it's still a 6 month wait.
