I found a used Remington 700 BDL in 30-06 for $375. I would like to buy it just for the action. Is it a good deal? Also the finish is gloss while I prefer matte.
What about Rem 721 action? Never hear of it until I saw the gun the other day. What's the difference the both of them? Any advantages/disavantages between them?
Hope lots of you guys/gals will respond so I can make a more educated decision.
Thanks for your time.
The safety is a little different as is the right side of the tang on the action (they can be retrofitted to 700 I believe). The bolt handle may not have the rearward sweep of the 700 and the stock may need inletting a little to make it fit (700 stock to a 721 action). The trigger is internally different (manufacturing materials). The 721 will probably be drilled and tapped for receiver sights (left side of the action) and it may be clip slotted for stripper clips.
I'd take a good (nice shape) 721 over a 700 any day.
The bottom metal on a 721 is throw away if you're going to restock the rifle. I use Badger or Dakota bottom metal on rebuilds so it's no problem for me. Replacement metal is the same as the 700.
well guys here in Soviet Socialist Republik of FrogKraut Europe we would consider, as far as used remmy 700's go, anything under $500 a real bargain and anything under $600 a lucky buy. I cannot find a used 700 under $600 here in krautland and my mate can't find one at all in the UK.. you guys are lucky. buy the 700 for $375 and send me it, i'll give you $100 profit..
Don't sweat the high gloss finish. About 10 minutes with 00 steel wool will give you a beautiful satin finish. I learned this trick from a custom bow maker. It works real well. It gives the look of oil but keeps the durability of polyurathane.
