Rem 700 22-250 needs a barrel wich cal?

I have a rem 700 that just wont hold a group any more. I want to make a new rifle and would love to be able to reach 1000 yds or more. What barrel would you reccommend for this action? Thanks

As of right now with the research I just did. I am leaning toward 2 very different calibers. The 6mmbr or the 338 fedral. I know the 338 would be the best all around hunting round of the two but for ease of shooting and longevity of the barrel the 6mm seems better. Man caliber decisions are so tough..

I have a former model 700 22-250 at the smith's right now being turned into a 243AI with a #7 28in. Lilja should be around 27-27.5 finished.

I didn't select this to be a 1000yd shooter so i'm of no help to you there but it should be hell on yotes out to about as far as my ability will allow.

I wanted a some what hot rod 6mm that I could use Lapua brass and would work in a short Rem. action. My smith has a fire forming rig so I don't have to put anything extra down the tube that I don't want to and 300 rounds of Lapua brass will last me the life of the barrel. I have talked to numerous people who shot their standard 243 loads in their AI rifles while fire forming and said they shot MOA with the standard 243 loads.

Since the .338 won't fit in your short action Remington, you're stuck with something smaller. My choice would be the 6MM BR only because the barrel will last much longer than the .243AI. If you're shooting anything larger than a prairie dog you better go with the .243 AI.

Short actions with a bolt face .Dia of .470 +/-
225 Winchester, 22/250 Remingtion, 6mm Norma BR, 243 Win, 250 Savage, 260 Rem,
6.5/284 Norma, 7/08 Rem, 284 win, 300 Savage, 308 Win, 338 Federal, 35 Rem, and
the 358 Winchester."

So now Im wondering whos right?? Either way its no biggy I dont think I am gonna go that way. A 6mmX?? is probably what I am gonna do. Unless someone makes a good defense for another caliber that will fit this bolt face..

I'd go with a 284 win. In fact, I'm about to start that project. 1-9 twist 28" barrel. Magazine length is an issue when using long bullets, but I'm doing single shot anyway so that doesn't really matter.

The 284 win is a pretty overlooked round ever since the 6.5-284 and the short mag stuff started. It can carry over 1100 ft-lbs at 1000 yards. That's pretty good considering it only uses a little over 50 gr of powder.

All the cartridges listed there will fit the mag well in the 700 short action.

Now, as far as which one! I think I'd probably go for the 6.5-284 winchester. There is a good selection of 6.5mm bullets and is quite capable of shooting out past 1000yds.
