rem 700 .204 feed issue-need help

I have a fairly new rem 700 sps 204 ruger and it has feed issue. I load 6 rounds in the internal mag and all the rounds bind about 3/4 way of the bolt closing. If I force it will put small dents on the sides of all the rounds, about 1/4" down from the neck. I have to go slow let it bind up and then pull back and try it again until it slides in. I have put about 200 rounds in it. I recently put a muzzle brake on it and now it is worse. It used to do it ever so often but now its every round. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I think the Rem 700 SPS is only designed to take 5 rounds in the mag. You may be jaming the mag spring down so far that the rounds can't move down enough from the bolt as it is being closed and the top one hard to strip . I know they say 5 +1 but try loading just 5 in the mag . Then one pushed into the chamber and 4 left in the mag. See if it works better.

Since "all the rounds" bind, it's not an issue of the magazine being too full. I would think it has to be a problem with bullet contour and/or cartridge length. The only way a cartridge is going to bind and put a dent in the side of the case is if the head of the cartridge is being held by the bolt while the bullet contacts the side of the chamber. Try going with a different bullet contour and/or a shorter cartridge.

There are times when cartridge feeding issues are because of a defect in the gun. If that's the case, the feed ramp may need to be polished or perhaps even modified a little.

A muzzle brake huh? Was the recoil a bit much? A muzzle brake would have nothing to do with how cartridges feed.

I have an SPS in .204 and I polished the underside of the rails, where the rounds push against, and this improved the feeding. I just used some 400/600 grit paper and took the sharp edges off the rails. Also, when you load the rounds, slide them back in the internal mag as you load them.

The specs on the SPS are for 4 rounds in the magazine.

My 7 and 9 year old shoot this gun but thanks for asking. I knew someone would say something about it.

It definitely doesn't have anything to do with the mag because I'll put a bullet through the top single feed and it will jam. It just got way worse after the brake and I know they disassemble that area to get the barrel off.

Well if it jams with only one round in the mag it must be something to do with the magazine follower or the feed ramp . Something is catching or some surface is rough and grippy .
