Re: Rate of twist for 308?

Actually it would be 11, not to be a wise arse, but from my readings it would appear that the 168 would remain the very most stable with this twist, especially when going trans sonic. Bottom line is it stays point on during flight, and therefore retains the most accuracy and velocity possible. This is a way under rated round, and to use one is to love one. Good shooting. Re: Rate of twist for 308?

This is from trial and error the serria 168`s work real good out to 600 yards with a 1-10 but past that forget it you will have no clue were they will end up at 1000 yards.

if I built another 308 it would probly ahve a 11 or 12 twist I do however like the 168`s out to 600 and have a couple thousand of them to prove it

Re: Rate of twist for 308?

I use 1 x 11.25 for my 308s if I order the barrel but I also have a 1 x 12 that shoot fine.

The use of 168 has changed over the years, mostly since the arrival of the 175's of course. I shoot 168s and will agree that to 600 yatds they are fine and in fact in my rifles they shoot BETTER than the 175s at 600. I recently shot a side-by-side comparison of the 168s and 175 at 600 and 1000 yards. My scores were better by a few points (and many "X"s) with the 168s at 600 and better by 9 points at 1000 with the 175s

600 Yards (6" "X" ring, 12" "10" ring)

GMM 168
Score 199-15X

GMM 175
Score 196-7X

Trajectory data The temps were pretty high, about 90 to 95 (estimate), humidity had to be at 100%, site elevation was 500ASL, wind light from 3 to 6 o'clock mostly with a few quick switched to 9 o'clock.

For the 168's I used 13.75MOA up and .25 to .5 (R) windage.
For the 175's I used 13.75MOA up and from 5.(R) to 1.25 (L) for windage to keep the wind.

1000 yards (10" "X" ring, 20" "10" ring)

GMM 168
Score 188-4X

GMM 175
Score 197-6x

Come-Ups for the GMM 168's at 1000, 36.5MOA with wind up to 2MOA (see, it was a light wind!)

Come-Ups for the GMM 175's at 1000, 34MOA and again up to 2MOA for wind.

168s can make it to 1000 yards but the 175's seem better suited to that distance.

Re: Rate of twist for 308?

Thanks for the great advice!!!! I should have told you the rest of the story from the beginning. I am looking into getting a 308 in a heavy barrel. I think that I am down to 3 choices (1)Win Stealth has 12" twist(2)Win Stealth II has 10" twist (3)Rem 700 VS has 12" twist. All have a 26" Barrel. Which one would you go with? Thank you for all the help. You guys are great.

Re: Rate of twist for 308?

Dennis, hopefully you have the opportunity to examine any of these rifles pre purchase. There can be significant quality issues in todays production runs, but either platform offers a sound rifle. I personally shoot Remingtons, but crave a sporter (Featherweight) in .270. Go figure . Main thing is to use it and love your choice. Loads will be adjusted to the individual rifle, and the trigger can be made right in either case. Break in the barrel right and there's a long shooting life in either. Re: Rate of twist for 308?

The nice thing about the 168 in 308 win is that it works well with 11.25 through 14.

12 works best if you follow green hill.

14 works best if you follow newer science.

Bottom line most here have used 10-14 in 308 with the 168 and MOST will agree that 12-13 would be the most usefull.

I have used 11.25 and 12 in this caliber with the 168 and like em both. If all I were ever going to shoot were the 168's in a factory rifle, I would go 12x.
