Question for 300RUM shooters

What velocities are you guys getting with the 180gr-200gr class bullets?
I'm thinking about building a 300RUM with a 30" Broughton 5R barrel and I was courious as to what kind of velocities I could manage safely .
This is gonna be a designated 400-800yd deer and hog gun , planning to shoot the 180 or 200gr accubonds.
some folks have said that 3500fps with the 180 should be do-able but that seems pretty optimistic to me even though thats what Lazzeroni (sp) states their Warbird will do out of a 26" tube.
I want something flat shooting

Re: Question for 300RUM shooters

my 300 RUM has a Kreiger 27 1/2"( including the brake) barrel 1 in 12 twist. With 99.5 grains of Retumbo I got 3426 fps with the 180 TXS or the 180 AccuBond and under .5 moa. The next lot of Retumbo would not reach this speed without stretching primer pockets,96 grains and 3340 fps was its best. With my lot of WC-872 and 115 grains my speed is 3375 fps. With the 200 grain Accu Bond I reached a speed of about 3235 fps with WC-872 and112 grains.( the WC-872 loads are load wwith a drop tube and are heavily compressed). With my first lot of Retumbo I used 95 grains behind the 200 Accu Bond but have not tried the newer lot with the 200.
My cases are Federal and I used the Federal primer.Since you have a 30" bareel you should beat my speeds considerabley

gETTING 3200+ 26" BARREL 103gr A8700 with 200gr Accubond...
I am not saying try this, start much lower and work your way up, the brass will suffer with this load!!!

Re: Question for 300RUM shooters

27.25" tube 12 twist and 3300+ with 178 AMAX and 180 ACCUBOND's. 3146 With 200 AB's When I use bullets coated in tungsten disulide I reach 3450+ with the 180 ACCUBOND.

If you want to go ultra flat shooting and deer size critters are the target, might I suggest you use the 178 AMAX. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!

Long range shooting is a process that ends with a result. Once you start to focus on the result (where the shot goes, how big the group is, what your buck will score, what your match score is, what place you are in...) then you loose the capacity to focus on the process.

Re: Question for 300RUM shooters

JD

While it wasnt a 300 Rum we were shooting it was the widlcat 300 Tomahawk. It sported a 34 in barrel and behind 100 grains of H1000 we were able to get the Berger 190's pushed at 3600 fps.

You may be able to get to 3500 with the 180's it will take considerable load development as our 3600 fps probably came from the 34 inches and being able to hold 100 grains.

Just for comparison we also shot the Berger 210 behind 100 grains of H1000 and got 3300, also used H50BMG at 100 grains too and dropped it to 3100 fps so around 200 fps faster is the H1000. Retumbo may net you what your after but I am not going to say you'll hit your 3500 figure as your barrel length may be subject to lower velocities.

Re: Question for 300RUM shooters

I was getting 3450fps with 180g btips and 99g Retumbo. I get 3225fps with 95g retumbo and the 200g AB. My barrel is only 26". The 180g load is definately hot, the 200g load is right at home. WIth your 30" tube, you should be able to get 100fps higher I would think.
