Pre-64 Rebarrel ?

I have a Win 70 Pre-64 in 264 Win Mag
It is time to do a rebarrel, just does not
group anymore

I was planning on rebarreling it to a
300 Win Mag, but having second thoughts
I heard that the 300 has trouble in a standard
action size. I don't really want to mess with
the action so that it will fit better.

Any caliber suggestions, the gun will be a
target rifle/backup hunting rifle

I was thinking about the 30-338 which would
give me more OAL room in the magizine

Re: Pre-64 Rebarrel ?

It's true that the .300 WM is tight in a 3.36" magazine. Too bad Winchester got beat to the market by the .308 Norma Mag.

Some other options are the 7mm RM, 257 Weatheby (ugh), .338 WM and the WSM's.

Find a few WSM cases and see if they will stack and feed out of your magazine.

Given the choice of the unpopular 308 N. and the small problems with the 300 WM I would go with the Winchester case. Of course you know the headspace to the shoulder will be off as you already have a belted cartridge.
