I'm a 6.5 fanatic and am putting components together for a 6.5 SAUM. If you have one, how do you like it and how does it shoot? Are you shooting 130's or 140's and what velocities are you getting?

I currently have a pair of 6.5-06AI's as well as a pair of 6.5x47 Lapua's but the SAUM intrigues me.

I've owed a 6.5 WSM but it was really finicky and I was pretty disappointed in it. It shot the thick jacket 140 bergers ok (5/8") at 3325 but would never shoot the hunting ones even at velocities as low as 3000.

Re: Ok. Who's shooting a 6.5 SAUM??

GAP is starting to tout the 6.5SAUM on SnipersHide pretty well. Even talking about a special rifle package just for that cartridge. Brass availability is going to be the real challenge

I have the WSM, shooting 130 CEB's @ 3400fps with 3/8" 5-shot 100yd groups. I highly doubt that a Berger will ever grace the bbl of this 6.5 as it is a hunting rifle & from what I've read, the Hunting VLD's probably won't hold up to the velocity.

I do think the SAUM will be more efficient & do pretty much everything the WSM will do, I didn't know that when I built my WSM. But i'm happy so, I get a little more horsepower & brass is almost plentiful.

Check out the inventory section on this page. He has built some 6.5 SAUMS and has specs listed if you enlarge the pics.

Re: Ok. Who's shooting a 6.5 SAUM??

Im shooting a 7mm dakota necked down to 6.5 with berger 140g bullets at 3440. I have had no trouble with the bergers holding together at all. Killed a coyote a few days back at 634yds. Killed a deer at 303 threw the shoulder and out the other side. I had the 140s up to 3500 without any bullet problems, just my experience.

The hybrids or the hunting VLD's.

^^I was thinking the same thing. It's a pretty well documented fact that most Hunting VLD's don't like to be pushed over 3250-ish. How many rounds do you have through your 6.5-Dakota?

Re: Ok. Who's shooting a 6.5 SAUM??

Maybe i have been just lucky but Im shooting the hunting bergers. I have two guns in this caliber and I just went threw my 19th pound of powder. I shoot 74.6 grains of retumbo so 1800 rounds or so split between 2 guns. By the way, case life is absolutly unbelievable as i have reloaded the same cases 30 to 50 times and have only split2 necks which were etched from the extraction. it will shoot 100 grain bullets at 4018fps
