new barrel options

im looking to get a new barrel for my rifle a remington 700 30-06, i was looking at Shilen barrels and they look great except for it would cost $500+ for the barrel then the installation, and then new bedding it'll cost over a 1,000. What other barrels makers, or other ways to make it cheaper but i don't have to sacrifice quality?

I use bergara, pre threaded and chambered for rem. 700's and do them myself. I have several on hand for $300.00 if interested. Go to their website and watch how they make 'em, great shooters.

Re: new barrel options

You might add to that the cost of blueprinting or truing up the action. It would make no sense at all to put all that money into a factory rifle w/o truing everything up first.

Go ahead and do it once and do it correctly. In the end you'll be glad that you did.

Only problem you will find when your done with rebuilding your 30-06 is that you'll want to rebuild every other gun you own. Now that might cost more than you want to part with!

Re: new barrel options

ALL of the quality barrel makers are going to be similarly priced. I have found that if you are going to build a custom rifle, don't take shortcuts but do it right. Also, make sure you have a COMPETENT gunsmith do the work or all the expense might be for naught! Good luck with your project.....Rich

It just occurred to me that you could keep your remington and buy one of the long range savages for what you will invest in the Remmy. The savage will shoot with a lot of custom builds and you will have TWO rifles......Rich
