Need Some Input on 7mm recoil comp to 300 RUM

I am giving some serious thought of ordering a custom built rifle and want a good all around gun for hunting deer, antelope, sheep, elk etc. I own at Winchester Mod 70 300 Rum, black shadow with muzzle break. Most of my loads are 180-210gr bergers @ 3000fps. I have used the 300 Rum for allot of hunts and its performed ok. I want to step down a bit and get away from so much recoil. I am hoping I can get some feed back from fellow sportsman that own the 7mm group of rifles. I have not shot any of the 7mm group and wanted to know how the recoil and performance compares between the 300rum and 7mm rem mag, 7mm Win short mag, 7mm Weatherby, 7mm STW. I reload all my own rifle shells so components are a consideration. Most of my shots are 200-700 yards. I would appreciate you input.

Most of my comparison is 7 rum to the 300 rum. All I know is the 300 rum is not practical to shoot unbraked consistantly in a hunting weight rifle. However both sporter weight 7mm rums I have owned were just low enough recoil for reasonable lenght shooting sessions. Any 7mm below that in powder capacity will recoil that much less.

Re: Need Some Input on 7mm recoil comp to 300 RUM

I had a 300 rum and would kinda like another one. I felt the recoil was a bit much with 210 bergers so I had a brake put on it. Braked I thought it was great to shoot. Currently I shoot a 11 lb 7 mag with 180's at 2970 no brake. I feel that at this weight with those bullets that's it fine to shoot off the bench but also that this would be about the max recoil for extended precision shooting.

There is a recoil calc spreadsheet available for download on LRH.

My 300 rum in a 9# er isn't bad, but it has made a couple of people into flinching idiots for the day(no brake, hard rem pad). I personally don't get irritated by recoil until it blows me off the bench. The only gun I've found I wouldn't shoot off a bench is a lightweight 416 rem with a lightweight leopold on top I pulled the trigger on once(couldn't have been over 8# scoped and ready). I would however shoot that one from standing as she'd toss ya a bit.

Re: Need Some Input on 7mm recoil comp to 300 RUM

My answer could be considered prejudice, but not as you might think. I once had a 300 rum. It slayed everything I pointed it at. I shot it quite a bit when I first got it, and the recoil didn't bother me. Well, father time marches on, and I grew tired of it due to the recoil, and went back to my roots, which has always been the 7 mm family. Namely, 7mag, obviously, 7 STW etc. I feel like I can do the same with a liitle finesse, and a lot less recoil to boot. I even owned a 7 RUM for a while. I really wasn't impressed. My STW's shoot circles around the RUM, with nearly the same velocity, and again , less recoil.
I absolutely love a 7mag. I have several, that shoot amazing, and I enjoy shooting them. I have an incredible 700 p in seven mag, that thinks it's a varmint rifle with 168 grain bullet.
But my pride and joys are my 7STW's. I have been shooting them since they became legitimate in 1996. And to this day, they still give me goose bumps. I built one in the spring, that is insanely accurate. I also just bought a Winchester Sharpshooter, that is a standard weight rifle. The recoil is very tolerable as compared to the 300 rum, in any weight comparison.
Either one of the mentioned will definitely be less in the recoil area, but NOT in performance. The 7 stw is one badass cartridge, that is manageable in recoil. But the 7 mag is no slotch in performance, and has even less recoil.
So of the two, the question is how much power do you want? Either one is not a bad answer.
