Why?

Are you talking competitive rules or for run-of-the-mill shooting?

Re: Muzzle Brakes

When I quote my bbl length to people I DO NOT include the length w/the brake. To me this could be quite confusing. To me if my rifle has 30" of bbl to burn the powder that is how long it is. It's not 32" just b/c it has a brake on it.

Re: Muzzle Brakes

I agree with Bill Bailey. The question can sometimes be confusing. If you are having a smith build a custom rifle with a muzzle brake, and want a 30" barrel my suggestion is specify 30" w/o brake. If you want the length to be 30" with brake say so. Saves grief and confusion.

A few years back we had a rifle built and specified 30" barrel, with muzzle brake. What we got was 30" including the brake. Still very happy with the rifle, but not what we thougth we were getting. A few more words and no confusion! My 2 cents.

It is my understanding that according to the BATF if the brake is not readily removable it is considired as part of the barrel lenght whether or not it is made intergal with the barrel or as add on that is not readily removable ( such as pinned, soldered, etc) Browning, Wheatherby, etc all the brake as part of the barrel lenght

Re: Muzzle Brakes

The BATF might think so but in reality the brake is NOT part of the barrel lenght. If it were my RUM barrel would be
29.25 " long when it really is 26". I can remove it also.
