I like this list. Here's mine.
6-284 (shooting 87gr vmax and 105 vlds)
7lrm (7mm/375 ruger) (shooting 180 vlds)
416 rigby (side by side double rifle)

That's how I would get some!

- 375H&H

I agree that the rifle /cartridge combination is what creates the appeal for a given cartridge. I would add two to this list:

-22 LR Savage TR. small game ,pests
-223 AR platform. Coyote, varmints to 500 yards
-6.5x284 Cooper 52. Varmints to med/large game, short to long range
-375 H&H Whitworth Mauser. Dangerous NA and African game
-450 H&H Double Rifle H&H. Close range African dangerous game
Use and shooting volume follows this order.

Re: master list of all around cartridge list

This list says nothing about the distance of the shots. . A bullet at 2900 fps at short range will have 5 times more energy as when it approaches it's maximum useful supersonic range at under 1300 fps. That's more than the difference in energy of a 375 H&H versus a 243 Win at the same distance. My point isn't to say a short range 243 performs the same as a long range 375 H&H, it doesn't, but stating a cartridge is suitable for a game type without considering the range and bullet characteristics makes no sense to me.

Likewise hogs are on the list. Hogs exist in a greater 5 to 1 range of weights. Size matters.

I consider such two parameter lists (cartridge name vs game name) to be more misleading than useful.

Re: master list of all around cartridge list

well, with the described game for each round, i would hope people would keep range in perspective based on wanting clean humane kills. i also agree the size of hogs could/should have been expanded upon. but common sense will tell you not to use the 338fed up close on a javalina lol. not being snotty, just sayin

i also agree with the rifle platform matching the round.

for me, 243 in a nice light bolt gun for long hikes and stalks. the 308 in a rifle just enough heavier than the 243 to help with recoil. the 338 i feel needs to be in an AR platform, as it has enough gusto to be a great quick handling self defense gun in bear country. and the 375 in a bolt gun only as heavy as is needed to deal with the recoil, and it should have back up iron sights for up close use on dangerous african game!

Conversely, people hunted with knives and spears long before they had firearms.

If you have limited weapons choices, you may have to adjust your tactics.

Size doesn't really matter if you use a knife and a few good dogs.
