Info on 338-308

Just thinking about a new rifle and thought I'd consider a 338-308.

I'd only be interested in using the 300 grain Sierra MatchKing.

Any info would be appreciated and any speculation at velocity with the 300 from the 308 Win case.

Re: Info on 338-308

Dave,

I'll guess if you use a long action, and seat bullets out a ways, 2000-2100 fps might be doable.

I have thought about the same thing. Or maybe a 338-06 with the 300grMK in mind. I've guesstimated the 338-06 could move the 300grMK around 2200fps from a 24-26" pipe.

Not impressive velocities, but considering the bullet mass and outstanding BC, it should carry plenty of power to 1000 yards.

I would be very interested in your results if you do this.

Re: Info on 338-308

Dave I thought about doing the same thing. Did find this little bit of info: 24" barrel Hornady 200gr 2500-2800fps,using 44.5-46.0grs Accurate 2015. Hopes this helps. Why not just build a 358 Winchester, it uses the same case basically (a necked up 308). A bit over 2100fps with a 250gr from 22" also 300grsp with 43grs. IMR4895 around 2200fps from 24".
