How to remove paint from cerakote?

So I recently bought a rifle that had been cerakoted, then painted over. I'm told the cerakote was baked on, and the paint is just a standard rattle can. What can I use to safely strip the paint off the cerakote?

Have you heard of a product called "goof off" ?

It's pretty good at taking paint off of painted surfaces.

We used it to remove tag paint from my son's truck.

Yes I have. How durable is cerakote? I have some tal-strip here that's like a sircraft remover product, think that would be safe? I would rather not spend hours on end rubbing.

Very.

Don't know.

No rubbing, just stroke it. (!)

With a clean part of the rag every stroke.

An aerosol can of CRC carb cleaner would probably remove it but that stuff may not be legal for sale in Michigan.

I tried the goof off and it didn't work to well. I can scrape it off with my fingernail.

MEK takes most non baked finishes off. I mix MEK and Acetone 50/50 get in a well ventilated area and it should soften the aresol paints and wash them off. A little elbow grease is required but it will not harm the cerecote finish. In my part of the country you can get it at True Value or Ace stores in small 1 pint cans.

Good Luck
