308s are 100'sec or so slower than the 3006. Do you really think the elk cares? Use the right bullet, put it in its proper place and either will do fine. I'm a 308 fan and have no issues with attempting 600 yards with any western big game. Minus brown bears of the far north west. 200 grain Sierra game kings are poison on elk at 308 velocities.

Long range shooting is a process that ends with a result. Once you start to focus on the result (how bad your last shot was, how big the group is going to be, what your buck will score, what your match score is, what place you are in...) then you loose the capacity to focus on the process.
