Drops matched advertised bc's

Hey guys,

Last weekend I got to shoot the 177g GS HV at 960yrds. My drop chart using the advertised bc worked right on.

This throws a bit of a wrench into the gears of conventional thinking on 30cal long range bullets. According to my calculations they will out run the 240 SMK as far as you want to run the #'s.

Run your own #'s and check it out. Remember the GS bullet will give you, give or take, 100fps over a conventional bullet of the same weight.

Next weekend I'll go and shoot some antelope. Hopefully I can get one or two set up at long range, and weather that I am comfortable shooting long in. I'll post how it went down.

Steve

Re: Drops matched advertised bc's

On the GS web site it gives 3 different BC's for the 177hv in 30 cal which one did you go with I tried the .589 and that seemed a little high with my balistics chart. Also those bullets like to be seated close to the lands and my rifle wouldnt allow me to do that so I couldnt get the acuracy out of them so that may have been the problem but my new rifle should be back soon and I want to try them out in that..
What kind of acuracy were you getting out of them at that distance. and what rifle are you sending them out of I am using the 300RUM...
Good luck on your hunt and do report back on the performance of the bullet
Thanks..

Tony

Re: Drops matched advertised bc's

its necessary to actually shoot the bullets you want to compare at the same distances. a 220, and a 240 isnt even close to a 200smk at 1500 yds, in my 30x378. at 1700 the heavier bullets have a slight advantage. im strictly talking trajectory, not energy. thats about as far as i can see hits on a good day.

Re: Drops matched advertised bc's

I used the .638 bc. I am running them out of a 30-338 Lap imp. MV of 3660fps. Shooting in a breeze of 5 to 8 mph at 1:00 I was able to hold 8" for 3 shots. I was holding right edge of a 20" gong. I was shooting at an elevation of 5200ft. I still have not been able to shoot them on a calm day.

Re: Drops matched advertised bc's

When I tried to shoot these bullets I had to change my bc on my drop chart down to .45 to get the right adjustment, I was shooting 3450fps out of my 300RUM but I did not play with them too much because unless I loaded them one at a time I couldnt get the oal long enough to reach the lands. I could get 1MOA and that was the best and they wouldnt do any better than a 10 in group at 700yds. I was really bummed because I had high hopes for these bullets but they didnt perform well out of my rifle. I dont want to give up on these just yet. My new finished rifle should be done hopefully by the end of the month and you have given me new hope for these bullets, thankyou I was impressed at the speed I could get out of them though and at 700 yds they were still blowing through 1/2 in steel plate the 168 barns only were making a dent in the metal at that distance. I just wish they were easier to get.

Every day seems like a week waiting for that damn rifle to get done..
