You say you would rather give up case length for added case volume. Don't understant this one my friend.

What I meant was if you take the standard REmington box magazine that they use for the ultra mags and load ammo to fit into it, the altered 338 ultra case will allow you to gain more case capacity back with a long bullet because you can seat the bullet out farther in the shorter case. In other words, the longer case will hold more water but after seating the long 225 accubond into it, the short neck and long body actually make it have less capacity than the shorter 338 ultra case. Now, if you were single loading and had the throat made longer, the 338 edge would hold more powder because less of the bullet would be below the neck.
Everything hinges on that dang magazine for a hunting rifle.
Same deal happens with these short mags. They would actually surpass the standard mags in velo if they would have put them on long actions with long magazine boxes and then throat them long so the bullet wasn't seated on the primer to make them feed!
Uncle Brians gun you just made for him is designed perfectly and if the factory makers would have done the same thing, we would see a real increase in performance instead of just hearing about it.
In all reality, the short action ultra mags are actually a better designed case and can actually shoot faster than a factory WSM case because of the same principles. They just were too late to the dance.
There are tons of examples of this that go back before we were even born. The 308 norma mag can equal or surpass it's bigger brother the 300 win mag in case capacity because it is short enough that it lets the bullet go out farther giving back the room in volume it lost in being shorter. It also has a longer neck wich helps with lands chasing over time.

Also, you said you looked at the Lapua and Lapua Imp but they have to much capacity for anything under 250 gr. Again I am a bit curious. The 338-300 RUM actually averages about 2 grains more capacity then the Lapua. If you believe your 338 Thunder(338 RUM Imp) will have the same capacity as the 338 Edge and I would agree with you, then you are basically talking about identical case capacities between your 338 and the Lapua

I was more referring to the 338 lapua improved when I said this because it would have so much case capacity for the 225 that unless you had a long target barrel, it would be overkill. Kind of like having a 300 ultra mag and only wanting to shoot 165's out of it. If you have the horsepower, why not push a heavy bullet with it?
THe standard 338 lapua has never impressed me much. TOns of case taper and a shallow shoulder angle make for inefficiency with heavier bullets. WOrks great in a full auto deck gun on a Huey, but not for my hunting gun which will be a REm 700. OH, and by the way, I believe you will get that 700 when I'm ready! If it's not far, it's boring.
