Seriously, congrats on a very successful year! It looks like I may have to rethink testing bullets with reduced loads......Rich
No 34 years ago I was not hunting elk yet.

Rich, the neat thing about all this to me was seeing a pattern form with the distances and the impact velocity. It made me rethink things too. As much as I like to see exits, it sure is not mandatory for a good blood trail or DRT kills. What most amazed me here with the 215 was the fact that on at least 4 kills over 500 where the bullets were less than perfect placement the animals never made it more than a few steps from where they were shot. No follow up shots needed. The fragments made it to the vitals. Yet as we cut these animals up we lost only a minimal amount of meat. I can sure tell you some other brand bullets I have used in the past would not have put the animals down and we would have been sending a follow up or in deep trouble at these distances. I still like the way these 215's work out past 600 yards better. They will almost always pass through there with a large exit hole. But their ability to put down big game at closer distances is great too. I still believe you can't have it all. Any bullet will have it's sweet spot where it will shine at a certain impact velocity. But like I said before, give me a bullet that will do best at longest ranges and also good up close and that is what I prefer to use. A bullet that preforms better up close and may not open at the long pokes has no place for my type of hunting.

Again, congratulations! I agree that as a long range hunter, the most important thing is to be effective at long range. Close up, it is a lot easier to place a bullet where it doesn't matter so much.....Rich

re: Comparing the Berger 210 VLD to the 215 Hybrid

I, like I'm sure many others, have followed this thread as close of closer than any I've ever followed. Partially, because I enjoy reading Jeff's write ups and the other part because I wanted to see how these Bergers performed on game.

I may not know Jeff as well as some of you but I know him well enough to say he is a no BS dude! Even if you don't agree with him, you can ALWAYS count on Jeff's opinion to be truly fact based. Jeff never puts any kind of "spin" on what he posts to make himself or the product he is writing about look better than it really is. He writes it up how it truly happens. No more, no less. Which is probably why I followed this thread as closely as I did.

I have to be honest, before now, I was never a big fan of Berger bullets on game. In fact I wasn't that big of a Berger fan at all. I never understood why so many were "drinking the Kool-Aid" per say. Wellll, I can honestly say, Jeff and a couple others have made me a believer. That's not to say I think these bullets are "magic". I certainly believe there is and always will be exceptions to any rule and NO bullet is going to be the best at everything but I think we can say these Bergers have proven themselves over a pretty wide range as a hunting bullet. Both, near and far!

Jeff, I know you don't do this because you're looking for any awards or notoriety. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if this post makes you feel a little uncomfortable but myself, as well as many others, believe you've earned it. You Sir, are truly and embassador to our sport and I'm glad to say I know you.

I can only hope you fill as many wolf tags as you have game animal tags. Actually, I want you to fill 10X's as many wolf tags!!!

B23, you are too kind, Thanks. I am glad the thread has been found useful. When you start to stack up the real data we all learn from it. At least I know I do.

This is a great thread Jeff. It made me rethink my love of the 7 mag. What would be your thoughts on the 200gr hybrid? Would you expect similar results?

Thanks for both your detailed threads on Bergers performance on game the last two hunting seasons. I have shared both threads with many of my hunting friends. Several are going to switch bullets for next year.
