Can I stabilize

I am looking for some info from those who have been there and done that. My question is: Can I stabilize a 75 grain A-Max and a 105 A-Max in a 22/6mm and a 6x284 with 10-twist, 30-inch barrels?

I'm going to say that you'll be marginal on both. I don't have any experience w/the 22 but I bet that you'll be pushing the 105 hard enough that it will work in a 10" twist.

If I were a betting man I would bet against you getting the 105 to stabilize in the 1-10. The 75 gr 22 cal would be a bit harder to predict. My brother is shooting them in a 1-9 twist 223 Rem with great accuracy and at alot lower velocity then the 22/6mm will have, you may have a chance there.

Course, I have been know to be wrong from time to time about needed twist rates!!!

If you have not built the rifles yet, I think I would recommend going with a 1-9 5 or 6 groove with both bullets, expecially the 6mm. I know they work very well with this class bullet.

i just shot some 105 a-max molys in a 26" 10 twist 243 ackley today. it wouldn't stablize. huntinfool18

I havent tried the 6mm/284, but my previous .224 Clark with 25.5 inch 10 twist barrel reached about 3,830 fps (275,000 rpm) with the 75 Amax.

Prior to testing, I thought it had a chance, but unfortunately not even one seemed close to stabilising, so based on that I would be fairly confident that a 22/6mm producing about 3,700 fps would have little to no chance.

I read somewhere that some researchers found that the .224 75 Amax needed about 280,000 rpm to stabilise, shot best at around 290,000 rpm, and usually destructed at or before 330,000 rpm. If that is true, you would need 3,900 fps in your 22/6mm just to achieve 280,000 rpm, and 4,000 fps to reach 288,000 rpm.

I suggest that you follow the advice of Kirby, and just choose a 1 in 9 twist to be sure.

I haven't even been tempted to try the 75 Amax in my current .224 Clark with 6.5 twist barrel, as I know what would happen.

A friend of mine built a 6mm/284 with a 1/10" twist. No 105gn/107gn bullets would stabalise in this rifle.

It's possible to stabilize the 105s with 10tw above 3000' elevation & hot out. Forget the 75s in 10tw.

Velocity and RPMs have little or no effect on stabilization. So you won't get there before dusting them.
